Many of you will already have received their VA (provisional tax assessment) for 2021. The Belastingdienst will use the taxpayer’s available history to impose the 2021 VA. For example, a VA may already have been issued for 2020, or a final tax assessment may have been made for 2019. These data plus the adjusted rates and legislative changes as of January 1, 2021 are (often) the basis of next year’s VA. However, due to the corona crisis and the concomitant measures, income or profit may turn out to be much lower in 2021. If the Belastingdienst still works with outdated data, the VA will very likely be far too high and consequently, you will pay too much tax. Therefore you should check if the estimated assessment is in line with reality. If it is too high, make sure it is reduced. You can do this by filling in the form Voorlopige Aanslag 2021 (2021 Provisional Tax Assessment) which can be found in the Mijn Belastingdienst portal. Of course, the assessment can also be too low. In that case it is also wise to have it raised. If you pay the VA in a lump sum you are entitled to a payment discount.
